Aside from stains and discoloration, too much coffee puts teeth at greater risk of decay.
A study conducted by the Australian Dental Association (ADA)
reveals that caffeine draws fluid from the body and reduces natural saliva production, resulting in a dry mouth.
A constant flow of saliva in the mouth is the best natural defense against decay as the acid from bacteria can be neutralized by saliva. Other caffeine-rich drinks like chocolate, cola and tea can have the same effects.
So if you want to keep those pearly whites and that beautiful smile, limit intake of caffeine-laden drinks. If you are a coffee addict, think twice before ordering that second cup. And if you just can’t help it, drink plenty of water to replenish the fluid that was drawn out by the caffeine.
