An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Or should I make that “A pound of apples a day keeps the doctor away?”
The government recommends eating at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day to stay healthy, but a new study says that may not be enough.
According to a study from the University of Texas, the nutritional content of produce has been falling over the last 50 years. As foods, particularly fruits and vegetables, are being grown faster, the nutritional content has been declining. Farmers have been planting genetically engineered crops designed to grow faster and bigger, but the produce is not able to acquire as many nutrients from the sun and soil. Thus, a significant drop in vitamins, minerals, proteins and other nutrients content were observed.
One solution might be consuming organic fruits and vegetables which are not genetically engineered. Or additional servings of fruits and vegetables aside from the government’s daily recommendation.
