Decorating a Bachelor's Pad

Decorating a bachelor’s pad can be a little intimidating especially to young men who just decided to live on their own. The thought of creating a comfortable and, at the same time, practical and easy to maintain space for relaxation or entertaining friends can be a formidable task for young bachelors, especially if they don’t want to ask for mommy’s help just to prove that they can do it by themselves.

Socialite and bachelor Shawn Umsted, himself a proud owner of a posh and well-appointed condominium unit in Ortigas, shares tips and insights on creating a space suited for the carefree lifestyle of the single young male.

Shawn suggests that the most practical design option for cash-strapped young bachelors to follow is the minimalist style. This style allows them to use whatever is available and also gives them the excuse to spend as little as possible. When the cash starts flowing in, they can start investing on more expensive furnishings and adapt a more extravagant design style.

However, Shawn adds that it is important to buy items intelligently and be careful not to collect clutter. Even if the wide open spaces tempts you to fill your pad up as fast as possible for fear that the echoes bouncing around will make you deaf, you should avoid filling up your pad with silly junk. Remember that clutter will show a side of you that is both uncultured and sloth and is not the way you should be presenting yourself in your new pad.

Lastly, Shawn advises bachelors to decorate their pads just the way they want to. Defy convention, be innovative and never succumb to undue influence. It’s your home, make it as comfortable and practical as you want it to be.
