Fun in the sun

Don’t let the heat ruin your summer vacations! My friend Shawn Umsted, a frequent traveler, shares a few tips to keep your cool even when the sun is beating down harder than ever.

Make sure that the hotel or motel you made reservations for is air-conditioned. Not much is worse than arriving at your lodging in 95-degree heat and finding out there’s no AC!

Take plenty of beverages along, and plan ahead by putting them in the freezer for an hour before your journey. Keep an eye on any cans, though, which can explode in your freezer if left long enough.

Drink lots of water and other healthy beverages to avoid dehydration. Sodas and super-sweet energy drinks can taste great when you’re overheated, but won’t help you feel better in the long run.

Wear light, loose airy clothing. Blue jeans might seem like good summertime wear, but won’t keep you cool in severe heat. Light colors will reflect the sun rather than soaking it in, so black is worst of all on a hot day.

Even if you’re not a big hat-wearer, consider a cap on a hot day to provide some constant shade for your face. And try to wear open shoes like sandals or go barefoot whenever possible.

Try to remain cool and calm even when travel hassles like freeway traffic arise. Getting worked up over things you can’t control will only make you perspire even more and won’t help at all either.

Don’t forget to apply sun block on a hot day, even when direct sunlight doesn’t seem overbearing. It’s okay to have some tan but sun burns are totally out of the question!

Have fun!
