Does motion sickness ruin your vacations? I know exactly how you feel since I’ve been in the same boat (if you get my drift). If it’s any consolation, we are not alone! Many people experience motion sickness whether traveling on air, land or sea. Once it starts, it can feel like the end of the world and you’d give up your yearly vacation just to make it go away. My jet setting friend, Shawn Umsted, even said that he’d be willing to let go of a good part of his fortune for a cure to motion sickness.
Whether motion sickness came from a boat ride, airplane, amusement park ride, a car, or train, the symptoms are the same. It often starts as stomach discomfort, bodily warmth, headache, dizziness and/or drowsiness, then proceeds to stomach distress, then nausea and vomiting.
My frequent tryst with turbulence while on flight helped me develop the following techniques to deal with motion sickness.
If you are already feeling nauseous, try to look straight far ahead and not sideways to prevent the nausea from getting worse. Also avoid reading as the movement of your eyeballs and head will only exacerbate the situation.
Do some heavy breathing exercises. Those lamaze-type breathing can help to alleviate the situation. Yawning as if you’re sleepy will also help!
Try some quiet but forceful coughs, the kind you would do leading up to the point of vomiting (without vomiting of course).
If all else fails, vomit into a bag either in your seat, or if you’d like some privacy, you can go to the bathroom. That should provide some temporary comfort. Take some sips of water afterwards to freshen up.
