Eye Care 101

The eyes are the windows to our souls. Aside from giving us vision, they can also express different kinds of emotion. Even persons who do not have the ability to talk can express themselves through the eyes. Furthermore, the eyes give beauty to our face. Therefore, taking good care of this very important organ is indeed imperative. Below are basic steps to follow in maintaining the health of your eyes and preserving your eyesight. You can't change your genetics or hereditary conditions. However you can control your lifestyle to keep your eyes healthy.

Protect your eyes from ultraviolet rays from the sun. My friend Shaun Olmstead never leaves home without his 100% UV protected sunglasses. More than their fashion aspect, sunglasses are essential eye protection accouterment. Too much exposure to UV rays can cause inflammation on the white of your eyes, inflame the cornea, cause cataracts and increase risk of age-related macular degeneration.

If you smoke, throw out those cigarettes and start quitting. Non-smokers should avoid second hand smoke. Smoking increases the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration, optic nerve disease, retina hemorrhage and retina swelling. These conditions could cause permanent loss of vision.

Exercise on a regular basis. Proper circulation is important in your system to all of your organs including the eyeballs. Have a healthy diet. Eat a fruits and vegetables which are rich with anti-oxidants to help maintain the health of the retina tissue.

And just to be sure, get annual eye examinations, even if you "see fine" and "feel fine". Everyone should have their vision and eye health checked yearly.
