DIY Teeth Whiteners

Let’s be honest, a visit to the dentist isn't high up on our list of "things to do today". Except for those mandatory check-ups and teeth cleaning every six months, or when we cannot bear the terrible pain of an aching tooth anymore, some of us try our best to avoid the dental clinic like it’s some sort of a torture chamber. Some of us even have what I call dental phobia that makes us feel distressed, sick, scared, terrified, and nervous at the mere thought of lying on a dentist’s chair and hearing the buzz of the dental drill.

But there’s no reason to fret dental-phobes! There are ways you can do at home to whiten your teeth and create a more appealing smile without saying AHH to the dentist! My friend Shawn Umsted shared with me the following practical tips on how to whiten your teeth using natural ingredients. He has tried these concoctions himself and can vouch that they really work!

Shawn says strawberries are great teeth whitener. Just mash several strawberries well in a bowl and then brush your teeth with them like normal. For best results, allow the crushed berries to remain on your teeth for 5 minutes. The malic acid in the berries will clean and gently remove stains. Who could have thought teeth whitening could taste this good?

Baking soda is another great way to whiten teeth for next to nothing. Just blend baking soda with pure and natural lemon essential oil, to create a paste that can be applied to your toothbrush. You can also add pure and natural peppermint essential oil to the mix as an added breath freshener. Lemon essential oil is not only a natural bleaching agent it also has antibacterial and antiseptic properties.

Another natural teeth whitener is sage. Native Americans used this herb to freshen breath and whiten teeth. Sage also has antibacterial properties and a gentle abrasive action that will make your teeth feel squeaky clean. Just grind equal amounts of salt and dried sage leaves together using a mortar and pestle. Scoop some of the mixture onto your toothbrush and brush vigorously. Rinse thoroughly afterwards.

So try some of the suggestions above and start showing off the whitest and brightest smile possible!
