Party Planning 101

Parties are great way to socialize and meet new friends. Getting invited to a swell party is the best way to go as one does not have to bother with the nitty gritty details except for what to wear and bring for the host. However, planning, preparing and hosting a party can also be an exhilarating experience. The satisfaction of seeing your guests having a great time in your event is just indescribable!

Whether you're inviting the entire neighborhood for cocktails or just a few friends for an intimate sit down dinner, throwing a great party requires panache and lots of planning. As host, your task is to create a mood, whether it’s relaxed, elegant, festive or wild, that should be carried out through every aspect of the party.

I asked my friend socialite and frequent party-thrower, Shawn Umsted, for some tips on planning a great party. He provided me with the following suggestions. First is to find a reason to celebrate. Whether it's a holiday, a special occasion, an achievement, a big announcement, a new endeavor, or a job well done, the reason you're partying will set the tone. Pick a date that gives you an ample preparation time. It is important to consider catering, decorating and entertaining needs when choosing the date. Plan your menu a week in advance. Consider flavors and combinations that reinforce your theme. What you serve is almost always determined by what's in season. Also consider the drinks and cocktails that you plan to serve.

Decide on the guest list. Take into account the size of your place (when entertaining at home), or the party area (when renting a venue). For cocktail parties, you'll need 4 to 5 square feet of space per person. Expect 70 to 80 percent of invited guests to show up for a large event.

Spread the word with flair: send out invites that reinforce your theme to add an exciting buzz. Also specify the dress code (if there is one). You can always hire a party planner to save you the hassle but it is still best that you involve yourself during the planning.

On the day, or night, of the party, enjoy yourself and your guests. Fun is contagious: Relax, pour yourself a drink, eat--and have a good time.
