Painting as a hobby can be a good stress reliever. After dealing with mounts of paperwork or attending business meetings all week long, being in front of a canvass with brush on your hand can be a welcome breather. It doesn’t matter whether you are into still life, landscape, portrait or even abstract painting, what’s important is you take your mind off from work and enter the world of colors and forms.
You really don’t need formal training. Just pick up that brush, dip it on the paint and doodle whatever you fancy! Just be creative, just be yourself! If your having a hard time getting ideas of what to paint, put on some of your favorite music, preferably something that would help you calm down and keep your mind away from distractions. Sit down and close your eyes, and allow images to come into your mind at will, without trying to control them.
My friend Shawn Umsted, himself a weekend painter, suggests watching the sun rise or set is a great way to conjure up artistic ideas. He also admits that watching people in a sidewalk café and observing interaction between strangers give him inspiration for new works of art.
Visiting art galleries and museums can also spur your mind into thinking creative thoughts. You're not necessarily out to copy ideas from other people, just to surround yourself with artistic talent.
Go for a walk in the countryside, a crowded city, along the ocean, or whatever strikes your fancy and take in the sights and sounds. Sometimes, all you need is a chance to separate yourself from the daily grind. And translate whatever you have absorbed from these trips to your very own canvass! Who knows, you could be the next Picasso!
